An engagement session is a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera and for me to learn more about the two of you! The images are also perfect for save the dates, custom guest books, or even reception table decor. Here are a few tips.
Location: I will ask you some questions about where you met, where your first date was, where you two like to spend your days off together, and where the big proposal happened. It is always really sweet to incorporate a location significant to the two of you as a couple. If you simply enjoy exploring new places together, we can pick a place you have been wanting to check out! Hillary and Adam’s engagement session below took place in the Grandin area of Roanoke where they first met, a spot known for their cute streets and fun murals. We also incorporated an awesome tandem bike since these two are avid bicyclists!
Props: If there is an item that really speaks to you two as a couple, please bring it along. For example, during Nadira and Kayvon’s engagement session in Annapolis, I learned that their first date was at a bakery over muffins. I had to track down a muffin to incorporate it into their images and we were in luck to find the perfect blueberry muffin! If you two absolutely love craft beer, bring along a bottle of your favorite beer and two glasses. If you have a dog that is practically a member of your family, bring him or her along!
What to Wear: I recommend to choose patterns and colors that coordinate or look well together rather than to match each other. Wear something that you feel comfortable in yet is also flattering. You may change halfway through the session and I recommend a dressy and a more casual outfit. Think of it as one of those first dates where you wanted to wear the perfect outfit, show off your personality, and look great for each other!
Don’t be afraid of color and a good way to include it is with accessories such as jewelry, scarves, or shoes. You may also consider having professional hair and makeup done or a manicure so you feel your best! Cleaning your ring before the session will make it extra beautiful and shiny for those detail shots. Have fun with it and here are a few examples of outfits that coordinate well together.
